Why are we so complacent in the South, asks G. Lakshmi
|
I lived in Pune before shifting to Tirupur eight years ago. And, one thing I've noticed about people here is their complacency. People don't seem to be bothered by anything happening around them. Tirupur is supposed to be an export hub, but there is absolutely no infrastructure in place.
Roads are not motorable, streets lights don't work and almost all residential areas are dirty.
We have councillors and influential people around us but they are too busy power fighting to notice these grave problems. And people have taken it all in their stride.
Such situations existed in Pune too.
But there, I saw leading citizens get together to form a citizen's forum and fight out these issues with the Municipality and the government by writing articles and dashing off photographs of pot-holed roads to leading dailies.
It would often result in immediate action. Corruption is rampant but we cannot be complacent and give up fighting, leaving it to time and destiny to change things.
We have to join hands to fight about issues that concern us and see to us that elected representatives work.
