READY FOR D-DAY Aspirants for the Eva Miss Chennai title
You see beauty pageant contestants and you wonder if life isn't unfair? The nicest is not always the prettiest, the prettiest not always the smartest.
And then you meet the Eva Miss Chennai aspirants and think maybe not. Here are 16 girls, all pretty, smart (there are computer science and microbiology students, and even a psychiatrist among them) and confident (you only need to see them address the media). With the youngest 17 years old and the oldest 23, most important, they have youth on their side, and the right to dream big.
Introducing this year's contestants, the organisers VIBA reeled off a long list of former Miss Chennais starting with actress Trisha. "Eva Miss Chennai is not a beauty pageant, we would like the winners to be seen as fashion ambassadors, " say the organisers. After all, the finalist would win a straight entry to the Miss Intercontinental, and others have the opportunity to be picked to represent India at the World Miss University as well as the Petite International.
The participants were trained by a number of experts — a diction teacher, a fitness expert, professional models who taught them to catwalk and a dentist who perfected their smiles. They even had sessions on yoga and meditation.
But then it was such a relief to catch a participant return to her seat, after a little over the top intro, stick her tongue out and worriedly ask her friend, "Was that bad?" It was comforting to know there wasn't a Miss Perfect.
The finals are scheduled for February 24, and will be held at the Chennai Convention Centre, Nandambakkam. workshops.
