Sonu Nigam served up a wild evening for his fans recently
|
CROONING TO CAPTURE Sonu Nigam proved to be a complete entertainer in a live programme organised by Idea in New Delhi
Ameen Sayani, in a popular programme on FM Gold broadcast a recorded performance by the late Kishore Kumar some time back. The ever-popular playback singer wasn't as mellifluous with the live orchestra on the stage.
But with his buffoonery and weird mixing of old and new songs in one flow, compensating for his ever-breaking voice with freshly engineered parodies, Kumar sailed through, leaving his audiences laughing. But then, a few old timers among them, who waited till the end of the programme for some euphonic trademark numbers by Kumar, were left high and dry. Nevertheless, they enjoyed the evening.
The versatile contemporary singer Sonu Nigam, the son of veteran ghazal singer Agam Nigam, reminded the audience of the same flavour this past week. He kept more than 30,000 spectators engaged in a live programme presented by Idea Cellular Limited at Delhi's Indira Gandhi National Indoor Stadium. The programme, titled Idea Rocks India, will continue in more than 20 cities of India over the next three months. It may have lost some goodwill because of mismanagement, but the singer compensated it with his people-to-people contact within the audience.
Hopeless compere
The hopeless compere could not manage to play the spoilsport. The singer, a complete entertainer and diplomatically correct to boot, who kept on endorsing his patron by repeating "Idea Rocks India" had the audience swaying anyway, proving he doesn't actually need a compere to host his show.
He had many in splits with his ability to subtly mock at bad singers amongst the audience who tried to sing with him on the mike, hungry for two minutes of fame.
With his evergreen songs like "Kal Ho Na Ho", "Main Hoon Na", "Bijuria" and others, the singer kept the audience jiving. Reluctant to sing old Rafi numbers, he mixed songs like "Chahunga Main Tujhe", "Mera Saya", "Phoolon Ke Rang Se" one by one, and ending this combo with "Main Hoon Na", he left many craving for those good old numbers. Nevertheless, with his perfectly rehearsed naughty dance steps bordering on the lewd, trying different tunes of his songs, hugging fans in between, making them sing with him and showering praises on them for "being a cultured audience," the singer earned quite a few founds of applause.
The three-hour performance that finished before 9.30 p.m, actually changed the life for many, at least for that night!
