Books on the dance floor

It was an unconventional book launch organised by Finlandia vodka, at a discotheque. But maybe not so inappropriate considering the book's title "Making the Gods Dance". Written by debutant novelist Ajaybir Garkal, the book is a political thriller based on the rise of Hindutva fundamentalism on the lines of the Islamic fidayeen in India in the year 2008. "We have organised this launch as an experiment for the Jack Daniels' Foundation of Arts and Culture (JDFAC) that we are planning to set up to promote the various arts including music and the fine arts," said Amrit Kiran Singh, Vice President and Area Director of Brown-Forman, which owns both the brands.

Public relations professional Garkal was inspired to write by the daily news. "There's so much happening. If you watch the news carefully there are so many interesting plots for a novel there. One really doesn't have to look too far. Another thing that has always intrigued me is the fact that a peace loving religion like Hinduism is being used to incite violence."
