India fashion week

India Fashion Week has got a new prefix and with it a whole new set of ideas

For now, it's April 5 when the supposed "business of fashion" will roll

Well, the ramp has been resurrected. After weeks of fracas when fashion in India was reduced to a tale of two cities, finally India Fashion Week is on course, courtesy ITC and is re-christened as `Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week'. Looking at the finer print beyond the new make up of two weeks two cities, two ramps, what's laudable is Fashion Design Council of India has been able to hold on to its numbers with one significant (non Mumbai territory) casualty - Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who has moved over to Lakme Fashion Week.

The promise

Going by the promise of Y.C. Deveshwar, Chariman, ITC Limited, we might finally be able to see the elusive "fibre to fashion" link. "We want to support the entrepreneurial promise that the Indian designers have shown." Talking of synergies, Ritu Kumar, President, FDCI says, "In the face of the onslaught of foreign fashion brands, there is a need to promote indigenous fashion handwriting." She clears when she says indigenous she doesn't mean ethnic wear but an Indian design that could be part of Western or Indo-Western as well. Now Wills Lifestyle as a brand doesn't follow this handwriting. Deveshwar's assertion of "promoting diversity rather than uniformity" feels fresh but it should reflect on paper soon. For now, it's April 5 when the supposed "business of fashion" will roll.
