Car and bike questions? We have the answers

Can 235/65 x 15 tyres be fitted onto a 6J rim or a 7J or 7JJ rim (alloy or steel) for a Mahindra Bolero and a Tata Sumo TCIC DX? Also what size of rims would accommodate the 215/75 x 15 tyres? Is a 6J rim the maximum for this one?

Gajendra, via email

Yes, 235/65R15 can be fitted on the 6 1/2 J, 7 J and 7 1/2 J rims. By fitting 235/65R15 tyres to the Bolero/Sumo, you will have to ensure that there is sufficient clearance for accommodating the increase in the 17mm section width over the standard 215/75 R15 tyre. This changeover will also result in lowering the height of the vehicle by 8mm due to the overall decrease in the wheel/ tyre diameter. This lowers the ground clearance of the vehicle, which is an important consideration in a utility vehicle. However, by lowering a vehicle, you also lower the centre of gravity, which makes MUVs like the Bolero and Sumo more stable. Bear in mind that your vehicle's speedometer will show an error due to the different tyre size. 215/75R15 tyres can go with 5 1/2 J, 6 J or 6 1/2 J rims.

I have the old Hyundai Sonata Gold Plus, which comes shod with 195/65 R15 Bridgestone tyres. Please advise me if I should go in for 205/65 R15 tyres or continue with the original tyres?

Bharat, via email

By changing over to a 205/65R15 tyre, width of the tyre increases by 7mm and the overall diameter of the tyre goes up by 12mm. This will improve the ground clearance of the car but fuel consumption may slightly increase due to the higher rolling resistance. The most important benefit of the wider tyre is that it will improve the road holding and braking of the car. There is no need to change the rims.

Can wider (185 mm width and 70 profile) tyres be fitted on a Maruti Baleno? If yes, what should be the ideal rim specification and how will it affect ride and handling?

Rishi, via email

If you change the size from 165/80R13 to 185/70R13, there is not much of a difference on the OD. But the sectional width of the tyre increases by almost 24 mm and hence it is better to check whether the vehicle can accommodate this increase in order to avoid tyres fouling with the wheel arches, especially when the steering is on full lock. The ideal rim size for 185/70 R13 tyres is 5.5 J x 13. This change will help you get better traction, cornering stability and grip.
