A tête-à-tête with two of those who've won the SS Music Veejay Hunt

He is a popular emcee and has a few flicks to his credit, recent being Anand (Telug) where he plays the stylish villain— gelled hair et al. She is a basketball freak, captained the State level team winning gold while at school and is currently doing her Plus Two. And the duo, Anuj Gurwara and Purnima Maudgil, is the Hyderabadi twosome to have made in the list of winners at the SS Music Veejay Hunt this year. Gibran (Chennai) and Pooja (Coimbatore) are the other two to have emerged winners at the nationwide talent hunt.
Tough
"Considering we have given 50 per cent of the finalists, Hyderabadis rock," says Purnima. And it was a tad tough competition as they battled at the various elimination rounds at Prasad's IMAX and Bottles and Chimney, all in Hyderabad, making most of the `five minutes under the sun', acting, singing covers of Robbie Williams and speaking.
"SS Music talent hunt is an accessible platform for young people who want to be in the limelight and this is India's only multi lingual channel," says Purnima.
"That carries more western music," adds Anuj, as they get ready to backpack to destination Chennai.
Anuj, who considers the opportunity as the "ultimate thing after emceeing" reflects, "being a veejay is a tough job. People change channels and you need have the ability to keep them hooked on to the show. You need to be spontaneous,"he says. Agrees Purnima, "at the end of the day it's a job. You need to stay awake, there are late hours behind what people might consider ticket to instant fame."
New shows
The duo is looking forward to hosting new shows, travelling to colleges for the campus beat, gigs and more. And on the brighter side, "losing weight and sporting purple and blue hair," adds Anuj who keeps a close tab at trends in the realm of gadgets, shoes and shades.
Purnima, the fashion buff, prefers comfortable clothes not necessarily branded but more likely from the flea market, and is excited about her new veejaying stint as also wrapping up her academics.
But for Anuj, the psychology and advertising graduate from Nizam's College, he is content with the break, which he considers, "retirement plan. Education gave up on me," he quips. Now you know why the duo made it to the top four.
