Need a day for love? Nah!

Love's doing quite well on its own steam, says Usha Mukunda

DRIVING FORCE Usha Mukunda: `It's love that makes the world go around'
The approach of this day invariably generates hype. The Shiv Sainiks and their ilk are out to blot it out and the love Sainiks go to ridiculous lengths to get mileage out of it. But in my view, romantic love is one thing that does not need to have a day dedicated to it. Haven't you noticed that it is in the air, all day, every day, and no one and nothing can take away or commercialise the thrill and magic of love? All over the world, boys and girls, men and women continue to be attracted to each other and thank god for this one constant in life!
The chemistry, biology or whatever is flourishing and vibrant. Look for yourself. It starts at the school age when a boy and girl begin to tease and laugh a lot together. There is some mild horseplay too. Then the young man graduates to sitting astride his two-wheeler while his girlfriend stands next to him chatting for hours. What stamina!
Then you have the couples who meet at a corner oh-so-casually, look around unconcernedly, and whoosh, the next second they are gone. Probably down that quiet lane. The alcove next to our garage provides a romantic rain shelter to our budding Nargis-Raj Kapoor types. Go into a park and you are likely to step out again just to give the lovebirds there some privacy to coo and peck.
So what does Valentine's Day have to do with this, or rather, what's love got do with Valentine's Day? Nothing. It's doing very well on its own steam, thank you. I, for one, find it very comforting and reassuring that while all around us is uncertainty and rush and stress, love is burgeoning. Year after year, generation after generation, it's love that makes the world go around.
In case you dub me over-sentimental, did you read that the Shiv Sena tiger has "approved" of love? So there you have it. Vive l'amour!
