Beat the heat

Easy-to-make thirst quenchers for summer



COOLERS Fresh juice

Summer is here and what better way to quench your thirst than a glass of fresh juice.

Punch

Ingredients

Water - two cups

Sugar - two cups
Chopped pineapple - half cup
Juice of orange - half cup
Juice of lemon - four tbsp

Method

Prepare sugar syrup by mixing sugar to water and bringing it to boil. Add juices and syrup. When cool, serve with ice cubes.

Citrus cocktail shake

Ingredients

Juice of grape fruit - three-fourth cup
Juice of lemon - quarter cup
Juice of orange - half cup
Sugar - half cup
Crushed ice - one cup
Mint leaves- one tbsp
Method

Mix all ingredients together. Pour into cocktail glass and garnish with sprigs of mint.

Ginger-lime squash
Ingredients

Sugar - half kg sugar
Water - five cups
Juice of lime - one cup
Peeled ginger - 100 gm

Method

Boil water with sugar and ginger. Stir thoroughly. When it becomes cold, strain and add juice of lime.

Jal jeera

Ingredients

Tamarind - 100 gm
Roasted ground jeera - two tbsp
Mint leaves - one bunch
Juice of lemon - two tbsp
Black salt - half tsp
Ground sugar - three tbsp
Hot water - six cups
Salt - one tsp
Method

Soak tamarind in hot water. Strain and extract juice. Grind a few mint leaves and roasted jeera to a fine paste and mix in the juice of tamarind. Add sugar, salt and juice of lime. Mix, chill and serve with mint leaves.

Watermelon-cucumber special

Ingredients

Juice of watermelon - 300 ml
Juice of cucumber - 100 ml
Ginger - One inch piece
Salt and pepper - to taste
Method

Peel and remove seeds from cucumber. Cut watermelon, cucumber into small cubes. Slice ginger. Blend in a blender. Strain juice. Serve with ice cubes, pepper and salt.

Banana-orange cooler
Ingredients

Juice of orange - 1 cup
Milk powder - Three tbsp
Water - quarter cup
Sugar- one-and-a-quarter tbsp
Small plantain (poovan) - 2
Method

Mix water, milk powder, juice of orange. Mash plantain with a fork. Add to mixture. Put sugar and pour into a bottle and cover well with lid. Shake well and serve.

Melon-lemon punch

Ingredients

Juice of water melon - 400 ml
Juice of lemon - two tbsp
Ginger - one inch
Rock salt - a pinch
White pepper powder - a pinch

Method

Cut melon into cubes. Blend in blender, melon, lemon juice and ginger piece. Strain, add salt and pepper.
