MAN WHO MATTER

For passenger delight

My door is always open and people can just walk in with their grievances, be they passengers or employees, P.C. Nayak

P.C. Nayak

He believes in the new slogan coined by the Indian Railways "Work for passenger delight and not merely for passenger satisfaction". Meet the Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) of East Coast Railway, Waltair division, P.C. Nayak.

After completing his electrical engineering from Burla in Sambalpur, Mr. Nayak joined the Indian Railway Services for Electrical Engineers through the combined engineering services exam held by the Union Public Service Commission. Before joining the Railways he worked for a brief period with Talcher Thermal Power Station (now NTPC - Talcher).

Second stint

This is the second stint for him in this city. Earlier he was here as senior divisional engineer at the electrical loco shed in 1995-1997. Then after serving in various other places he was posted back as ADRM in 2004.

Mr. Nayak worked in six divisions out of the eight that constituted the erstwhile South Eastern Railway. Though he had the fortune of working in six divisions he regards his stint at Khurda Road as senior divisional electrical engineer (traction and operations) as the most exciting and rewarding stint.

"Khurda Road experience was something I cherish till date. I was posted with the purpose of electrification the Khurda division. Till then the entire Khurda division was diesel-run. Working from the scratch not only gave me a lot of exposure but also a sense of achievement."

Doors open

Apart from being the ADRM he is also the divisional director of public grievances. "I do not like to keep people waiting for hours in the corridor. My door is always open and people can just walk in with their grievances, be it a passenger or an employee."

To streamline the grievance cell he computerized the department. Today any grievance letter can be registered, tracked and the progress can be monitored. Mr. Nayak can be also credited with settling employment issues on compensatory grounds very quickly.

Safety first

Giving utmost importance to safety Mr. Nayak was instrumental in setting up the electronic interlocking system at Duvvada and Jaggayapalem and the route relay interlocking system at Vizianagaram. "Today due to regular maintenance of the tracks the TGI (track geometry index) is so perfect that we can run trains at the speed of 150 km per hour," says Nayak.

Projects on hand

"Keeping in mind the growing traffic at Visakhapatnam we will be commissioning the platform No.6 by June. A huge coaching complex for the maintenance of the coaches will be commissioned by December. This complex will also reduce the clustering of trains on the tracks and the lines would be released for the free passage of incoming and outgoing trains. Apart from these we are working on a number of projects for the benefit of the passengers like we plan to set up six more deluxe retiring rooms, one air-conditioned dormitory, a big size ticket position display board, an automatic platform ticket vending machine and facilitating the booking of tickets through credit cards," informs Mr. P.C. Nayak.
