LOVE OVERCOMES M. S. Neelakantan of SIP Academy India with wife Geetha who runs a placement company from home

Geetha

The news came as an unexpected blow — he was struggling for his life in a hospital near Hosur Road. He was writhing and screaming in pain when I saw him. Even as his eyes met mine, he lost consciousness — he later told me he was holding on till I came. It was midnight and the senior doctors had left. The best treatment was not available to him. We learnt later that even a tablet as common as Dispirin could have prevented the blood clot from expanding and exerting pressure on the nerves. Had we not shifted him to Manipal Hospital, the worst could have happened. Dr. Hegde's skilful scalpel limited the damage. Only the left side of his body would be paralysed. We heaved a sigh of relief — me and my unborn child.

Neelakantan

For three years, I wallowed in self-pity. One day, I yelled at her — "Get out of my life. I am finished. Make a life for yourself". Despite my negativity, she did not give up hope — she stood by me like a rock. The thought — "will my daughter accept me?" — killed me. I hoped she would — after all, we had named her Arunima, which means the first orange tinge in the sky that signifies rejuvenation, rebirth and hope. We were right — our daughter lived up to her name. God sent other ministering angels. Akshay Chaturvedi took a gamble on me, making me the marketing manager of his Orpic Resorts. My other bosses Captain Gopinath and Dinesh Victor had the same trust in my abilities. Today, I can speak in a lighter vein about my condition. I tell the children at the SIP academy, "Look at me and you'll know that the right brain controls the left side of the body."

AS TOLD TO PRINCE FREDERICK
