A romantic comedy

"Rural Phantasy", a musical, will be staged by The Madras Players

The Madras Players' first musical "Rural Phantasy" will be staged on March 10, 11 and 12, 7.15 p.m., at the Museum Theatre, Egmore. An amalgam of song, dance and drama, "Rural Phantasy" is scripted and directed by Gowri Ramnarayan, and is a Madras Players-Just Us Repertory co-production.

Carnatic singers T.M. Krishna and Sangeetha Sivakumar supported by Amritha Murali and Arun Prakash, will perform live on stage. Special choreography by Bharatanatyam artiste Lasya Narasimhachari has been woven seamlessly into the play's texture.

The romantic comedy is inspired by Kalki Krishnamurthy's short story titled "Kanaiyazhiyin Kanavu" and is set in 1941, against the background of the Freedom Struggle and World War-II. It takes the audience to a world of make believe, but also offers a satirical commentary on the social evils that plagued India of the period, something which Kalki was adept at. It satirises hidebound patriarchal modes. He sets up a young, intelligent and educated girl to promote revolutionary ideals. But could three months of activism change centuries of aggression?

Songs of the 1930s and the 1940s, mainly those of Subrahmanya Bharati, as also the marching song of Subhash Chandra Bose, "Vande Mataram" as recorded by Dilip Kumar Roy and M.S. Subbulakshmi in 1939, Gandhiji's favourite Ram dhun, "Shanti Nilava Vendum" and a duet from the 1940 film "Sakuntalai" rendered by M.S. and GNB, have been used not only to embellish the play but also to evoke the atmosphere and feeling.

Donor passes priced at Rs. 200 and Rs. 100 are available at Landmark, Nungambakkam. There will be a special students' matinee on March 11, 3 p.m., at a concessional rate of Rs. 50. For bookings, call 98400-80783 or 93819-11977.
