CHORDS AND NOTES

GREATEST HITS

JAGJIT SINGH, HIS FINEST EVER

Sa Re Ga Ma,

Rs. 300 (two CDs)

Soulful, melodious, nostalgic, sometimes even peppy. The CD of the ghazal singer Jagjit Singh contains his trademark ghazals, geets and duets with Chitra Singh that shot him to fame as well as famous songs from different films. The set contains his works from 1977 to 1998 that featured in different albums. The first CD has offerings like "Sarakti Jaye Hai Rukh Se Naqaab Aahista" from The Unforgettables, "Apni Marzi Se Kahan" from Mirage, "Baat Niklegi To Door Talak Jayegi", "Woh Kaghaz Ki Kashti" are a great treat to the ears.

For a different variety it has songs like "Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar" from film Arth, "Hothon Se Choo Lo Tum" from Prem Geet and "Tumko Dekha to Yeh" from Saath Saath and so on.

The second CD contains several timeless ghazals such as "Tere Khusboo Mein Base Khat", "Apni Aankhon Ke Samandar Mein", "Main Nashe Mein Hoon", and songs from films as Saath Sath "Koi Ye Kaise Bataye", "Pyar Mujh Se Jo Kiya Tumne", "Chithti Na Koi Sandesh" from film Dushman and so on.

A valuable bouquet of renditions, worth having on your CD shelf.

KAASH UNKA DEEDAR HUA HOTA

Shishodia Cassettes, Rs 35

All songs in this album are sung by one Kumar Aftab, music is scored by a young Tushar Dutt while lyrics are penned by relatively new names as Khumar Naheti, Tinku Goel, Nafees Manzar and Rashid Diwana. While Aftab reminds one of how Kishore Kumar must have been in his early days of singing, consortium of `geets' explains how the group of neo-lyricists, musicians and singers is working hard to make it to the top, without working hard on the basics of their acquired skills.

Though songs by Manzar and Rashid are promising, Goel should refrain from it till he learns that there is a difference between a song and tukbandi. Aftab sounds acceptable in "Main Kahan Jo Kar Pata", "Bheja Hai Usne Aaj Khat" and "Aye Kaash Hume", but one can immediately make out that he lacks range. And hence, the whole album sounds so repetitive.
