What comes first, beauty, benevolence or honesty? This was the question put forth to twelve young women who showcased their modelling talents at the `Miss Coimbatore 2006' beauty pageant held at the Gujarathi Samaj recently.

There were three rounds that decided the winner of the prestigious titles in the contest. The first round was `Traditional wear'.

Culture driven

One of the co-ordinators of the programme said, "People always tend to misunderstand the title `Beauty pageant' as a means of exposure. We wished to show that traditional wear not only clears such misunderstandings, but also reflects our unique culture." In this round, the participants were clad in sarees.

In the second round the girls switched over to casual western outfits jeans, tops and skirts and they seemed more comfortable in these than they had in the sarees.

The third round was all about looking gorgeous in party wear. This round provided the third dimension to the performance of the contestants. In this round, the girls could choose between Indian and Western wear. So evening gowns rubbed shoulders with ghagra cholis with mirror and thread work. To prove that beauty was more than just skin deep there was an I.Q. round.

The judges asked the participants to arrange the qualities of `Benevolence, Honesty and Beauty' in their order of preference.

There were no wrong answers. Each person had her own opinions. But what really was expected out of them was how clearly they put forth their ideas and how well they could convince the judges about it.

The confidence, attitude, style and presence of the participants all contributed to the judges' final decision.

In all, there were nine titles that were won.

Nisha not only won an award for Miss Beautiful Eyes, she also clinched the Miss Coimbatore award. Ramya and Pujitha (who also won Miss Beautiful Smile) were runners up. Jyothi swept up the Miss Charming, Miss Catwalk and Miss Beautiful Hair titles while Sanjana was Miss Beautiful Skin.
