Jamia FM 90.4 is ready to serve the local community
|
Radio Jamia FM 90.4, a community FM radio channel is ready to the serve the Jamia community, and those residing within 10 kilometres of the campus. Jamia Radio FM 90.4 will be officially inaugurated this Monday by Prof. Mushirul Hasan, Vice Chancellor, Jamia Islamia University.
Iftekhar Ahmad, Director of AJK Mass Communication Research Centre who is ambitious about the coming radio station says, "The concept behind the evolution of Radio Jamia is to involve the community members in the process of broadcasting and to bridge the gap of communication between the elite, the people of Friends' Colony living on one side and the middle class people of Jamia Nagar and the poorer community of rickshaw-pullers living in the marshy area of the river Yamuna on the other side. However, the station is bound by the programme code of All India Radio and cannot broadcast news and other commercial entertainment programmes as that would defeat the very purpose for which it was set up."
According to Ahmad, Radio Jamia would initially produce programmes for one hour and later it would be increased to three hours. Subjects like health, environment, community development and career guidance would be tackled. It would prove useful for the students of AJK MCRC to learn the ropes of broadcasting and help in getting employment in the upcoming 350 FM Radio stations of the country. It can also be of tremendous use to different departments as a means of contributing to the community through establishing public contact.
In India the concept of community radio is quite uncommon beyond cities like Bangalore and Pune. However, in the U.S. out of 1300 radio broadcast channels, 800 are community radio channels.
The community radio channel has many advantages of its own as it highlights the local issues and serves as an outlet for the local budding talents to show their potential.
