Heady flavours

Civet's Prawn Festival is a feast for the palate as well as the eyes



DISTINCT AROMA The food at Civet has predominant Thai and Indonesian flavours

It's a long drive away from the city. But it's worth it, for, it takes you to this pleasant place called Civet, which means wildcat. Located on the premises of the International Tech Park, this four-year-old joint welcomes you with some really classy low-level furniture blended with some wrought iron structures.

Civet is hosting the prawn festival that is on till March 12. The fest is on only for dinner, served from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Wide variety

The menu offers a wide variety of dishes using tiger prawns. They come in everything: starters, soups, salads and the main course. If you have a problem, then you can mix 'n' match with the regular menu that the restaurant offers (there's quite a treat for the vegetarians too).

Though the restaurant serves cocktails, mock tails, international wines and beer, we decided to taste some of the in-house drinks, specially created by the chefs. So it was the Civet ice tea. This drink, with plenty of crushed ice, is a combination of black tea, mint leaf, honey and orange juice. The taste of this delicious drink simply grows on you. At Civet you can also buy a bottle of any international wine that appeals to your taste buds.

Then came the prawn starters. Be it the prawn satay, prawn tempura or the peppered prawns with leeks, it was amazing how the prawns could not only just taste different in each dish but also in terms of presentation!

As the restaurant serves food from the Far-Eastern countries, the food here is dominated with Thai and Indonesian flavours. So it's not too difficult for the Indian palate to get accustomed to the spices or the coconut-based dishes. But it takes a while to get used to the strongly flavoured sauces that come with almost all the dishes.

For the main course too, it is truly a feast. With dishes like spicy prawns with lime and chilli, brandied prawns with mushrooms, coconut-baked prawns with courgette or prawn and baby corn in black bean sauce, the food is a perfect rhythm of the spices and meat that leaves you craving for more. A must have dish here is the stir-fried prawns with beans snow peas and cashewnuts. With plenty of cashewnuts, this dish is loaded with calories. You could have it with rice to savour on its flavours.

The food served here is in large quantities and each plate comes with six pieces of prawns. There were no egg or chicken delicacies on the menu. And even for the soups, Civet uses vegetable stock. "That's just to give our vegetarian customers also an option to enjoy the food here," says Saurav Saha, general manager of this stylish joint. "We also have a Thai food consultant who comes here once in two months to update our chefs on Thai menu and presentation," he adds.

Then came the desserts, which arrive in style in a trolley to your table and you pick the dessert of your choice off the trolley. The chocolate concorde or the tiramisu are completely sinful. Just enjoy it while it lasts and forget all those resolutions that you made in one of those damned moments.
