Help, it's Holi!

What would you do to make Holi `unholy', especially for your skin and hair? As it is a lot of us are terribly allergic to the splash of colours; not just colours, it now includes grease, paints and God knows what else. The gulals are widely believed to be full of chemicals that can damage any sensitive skin. Anyway here are some do's and don'ts from two leading skin clinics in the city - Kaya Skin Clinic and Berkowits Clinics - that could keep your skin, hair and eyes a little safer.

Before Holi, use a toner to close your pores, a sun block on all exposed areas, and of course, don't use metallic colours. Instead use natural colours made of flowers or sandalwood. One can use mehndi as a substitute for green gulal. Liberally coat your body, face and hair with oil, preferably olive oil, apply a coat of nail polish and a thick layer of transfer resistant lipstick. And post-Holi, take a quick bath, use moisturising cream for removing colours, use steam on your face to open up the pores and release the trapped colours and use a fruit-based (papaya) face pack for the clean-up. Or apply ubtan on your skin. Ubtan is a mix of besan, moong dal powder, turmeric powder, cream and tamarind juice. Wash your hair with mild herbal shampoo.
