Spring forward

There's so much colour in Benetton's Spring-Summer lines. But still you don't look over dressed

Lollipop and bubblegum hues in your wardrobe! Think Benetton and you instantly think colour. The company that ditched drabness for colour, and more colour, springs forward this season, spinning a look that's signature clean, yet more cheerful.

At a fashion show in Aqua, The Park, to unveil its Spring-Summer lines recently, United Colors of Benetton proved that even the icy blue water in the swimming pool couldn't beat the cool quotient of its clothes. The ramp — put up bang on the pool — reflected the light and floaty feel of Benetton's warm weather wardrobe. From the sweet girl look to power woman attitude and wear-now casuals to smart formals, Spring-Summer's agenda embraced the exuberance and energy of urban style. That too without shouting an off-colour remark!

Hot hue

The hot hue for men this season is pink. For women, lilac is back in a big way. That doesn't mean berry red, mint green and lime yellow are out. They are a mainstay as always — ushering in the freshness of the season. Well, do we have seasons? Yes, hot, hotter and hottest! So this `Spring-Summer,' Benetton offers cool cottons, wispy knits and light linens. Upper East Side, Beverly Hills, Neo Romantic and Desert Rose... The lines range from prim-and-pretty to smart-and-playful looks for women.

Skirts, linen trousers, pedal pushers, safari jackets, romantic blouses, coloured jeans, and cigarette pants formed part of the repertoire. The silhouettes were in true Benetton style, clutter-free, and the embellishments, subtle — like a touch of sequins, barely there pin-tuck or tiny frills.

The men's lines were a parade of colour. The themes here ranged from Up Street and Training Camp to Caribbean Love. Slim fit trousers and wear-now breezy blazers to easy-going tees and crisp shirts... the collection reflected laidback elegance.

According to Gagan Singh, managing director, Benetton India Pvt. Ltd., "The accent this season is on creating unusual contrasts. If one visits the store, different combinations can be worked out with the separates to achieve a cool new look." Benetton, that now has its exclusive store on Khader Nawaz Khan Road, is also looking at opening an outlet in a mall in the city, she said.

Though Benetton's new lines for children were not displayed at the show, where Chennai's chic crowd had congregated that cocktail evening, Gagan said the collection too was about simple looks and colour — rainbow stripes and sunny yellows, fire engine red and chocolate wrapper purple!

Colour IS Spring's blueprint for success. And who knows it better than the United Colors of Benetton?
