Foot-tapping music

Cassette and CD of the Kamal-Jyothika starrer "Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu"

STARRY AFFAIR At the cassette release function

It was truly a gala affair what with the presence of some big names from the Tamil tinsel world. At a recent cassette release function of the much awaited "Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu", the lead pair Kamal Hassan and Jyothika, and director Goutham Menon shared the stage with other directors Saran, Hari, Selvaragavan, Dharani and Lingusamy, actors Simbhu, Sibi and Vivek and playback singers Unni Menon, Chinmayi, Srinivas, Pop Shalini, Karthick, Devan and Srilekha Parthasarathy.

The cassettes and the CDs were released by the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner R. Natraj. The first copy was received by Harris Jeyaraj, who has scored the music for the film.

There was a smile writ large on producer Manicam Narayanan's (Seventh Channel) face, as he welcomed the gathering. An interesting aspect of the film is that it has been shot entirely in New York. S. Ravivarman handles the camera.

At a programme organised as part of the launch, the singers belted out popular hits of Kamal Hassan and Harris Jeyaraj. However, the crowd did not get to listen to any number from "Vettaiyaadu... " itself. The five songs in the album (all penned by Thamarai) are bound to attract young listeners as they are foot-tapping and have the unmistakable Harris Jeyaraj stamp. The number `Velli Velli Nilave', picturised on the lead pair, is the pick of the album and has enchanting visuals. `Paartha Muthal Nale' sung by Bombay Jayashree has a catchy rhythm. However, Hariharan and Unni Menon are not at their vocal best.

`Karka Karka' (sung by Devan, Tipu, Nakul and Andrea) has that I-have-heard-it-before ring to it.

`Uyirile' (Mahalakshmi and Srinivas) is melodious and the singers have done a good job, while `Neruppae' (Frankom Solar Sai and Sowmya Raoh) has mass appeal.
