Well-timed
Till a few years ago, Oscar winning movies were never released in India, as they were not commercially viable. But the multiplex boom in the country has seen these movies minting money. In Chennai city, at Sathyam Cinemas, three Oscar winning or nominated films are being screened "Crash", "Memoirs of A Geisha" and "Pride and Prejudice" and four others to follow are "Brokeback Mountain", "Walk The Lane", "Munich" and "Match Point" by the end of the month. The release of the films, coinciding with the telecast of the Oscars ceremony in the first week of March, has created a new revenue stream for Hollywood films in India.
"Crash", which won the Best Picture Award got a whopping 95 per cent opening in Chennai in its first week, which is truly amazing. Says Swaroop Reddy of Sathyam Cinemas: "Awareness about the Oscars has created a new niche audience for these films."
