Short skirts are back in style and longer ones are so yesterday

SHORTER 'N' SWEET With shorter skirts, one has to focus on one's footwear too

Haven't you envied all those girls for being able to flaunt their legs sculpted by workouts, thanks to stylishly cut skirts? Don't lose heart: you can do it too. Here comes a marvellous excuse to bare your legs: short skirts are the hottest fashion now. Pleated skirts of knee length are the flavour of the season, and are fast replacing the long loose skirts in vogue.

The Indo-Western fusion skirts with volumes of fabric covering the heels were yesterday's rage. Skirts have taken an abrupt turn with the comeback of short skirts, carrying an apparent Western aura. Right from the fashion ramps of Delhi and Mumbai to the streets of our own Mangalore, shorter skirts definitely turn heads.

"Short skirts are back to give Indian women's fashion the much-needed break from the repetitive mélanges of ethnic and Western. Short skirts in light-weight fabrics and pastel shades have come as a breath of fresh air in the glittering dazzling world of loud, flashy colours and over-emphasized designs," elaborates designer Mahesh Ravi, busy with his summer collection of short skirts for the South Indian market.

Textile designer Rohit Menon feels the practical convenience of the fabric and cut wins it popularity over long skirts. "They are ideal for the hot climate. Unlike long ones, they are not cumbersome. Moreover, their utility range is wide — wear it to office, parties, at home, to a picnic or whatever. They look just apt."

Fashion gurus recommend short skirts of subtle designs and soft colours like peach, light green, off-white and different shades of pink as the ones to sport this season.
