Celebrating Earth Day

A series on environment and globalisation will be screened at Top Storey, Alliance Francaise

The Max Mueller Bhavan in cooperation with Alliance Francaise and Sustain - Citizens Alliance For Sustainable Living, presents "Earth Day" , an environmental film series, from March 20 to 24 at Top Storey, Alliance Francaise de Madras, 24, College Road.

Global industrial development in the last 20 years presents new challenges with regard to the way people treat and use the environment. Economic globalisation affects everything from daily life and habits to cultural bonds and national ethics. India with its rapidly growing economy is facing both the chances and risks of globalisation. The film series "Borderless - Humans and Environment in a Global World" throws light on different aspects of this issue.

Award winning documentaries as well as feature films dealing with environment problems in India and their global backgrounds and causes will be screened. The series is part of a project carried out by ECOMOVE International, a network of international film festivals.

Some of the films in the series are "Jalamarmaram - The Whisper of Water" (March 20, 7 p.m.), "100 % cotton - Made in India" (March 22, 7 p.m.), "The Many Faces of Madness" (March 22, 7 p.m.), and "Drowned Out" ( March 23, 7 p.m.). "Jalamarmaram", directed by T. K. Rajiv Kumar, tells the story of Nirmal's father Usman who dies of cancer caused by the presence of toxic waste let out by a chemical factory into the village water supply. The death affects not only his family but also the entire village. "100 % cotton... ", directed by Inge Altmeier, portrays cotton from its cultivation in India to its sale in the form of clothes in industrialised countries along with the grave consequences for humans and the environment.

"The Many Faces of Madness" is a short film that emerges from the reality of destruction and appropriation of common resources in India.

The people of Jalsindhi in Central India must make a decision fast. In the next few weeks their village will disappear under water as the giant Narmada Dam fills. Arundhati Roy joins the fight against the dam and asks difficult questions. Shot over three years, the film "Drowned Out" tells the story of one family's inspired stand against the destruction of their land, homes and culture.

Besides these, there are a couple of films such as "Life Running Out of Control" (March 21, 7 p.m.) and "Surplus - Terrorised Into Being Consumers" (March 24, 7 p.m.) that will be screened.
