CHORDS AND NOTES
DRAUPADI - Krishna ki Ekmatra Sakhi
Softalk, Rs.199
This set of three Cds is a steal for the price, for those interested in the spiritual background of mythology and legend. Narrated by Sri Goswami Abhishek Ji Maharaj, the discourse is about the princess of Panchala who married Arjun, was constrained to become the wife of his four brothers as well, and is considered one of the triggers that set off the Mahabharata war. This particular album, interspersed with a few songs, concentrates on the relationship between Draupadi and Krishna. The love between a `sakha' and a `sakhi', as Draupadi and Lord Krishna used to address each other, has no parallel in any other human relationship, says the guru. "This friendship crosses all barriers and breaks the man-woman barrier," he says.
PIONEER OF THE KHAYAL
Underscore Records Rs.300
This one is for students of music. Not only those who sit at the feet of a guru and practice their taans, but also those who consider it important to upgrade their knowledge about the world of ragas and gharanas. In this informative album, Pandit Amarnath gives a lecture-demonstration about aspects of the life and contribution of the great Ustad Amir Khan of the Indore gharana. It is a recording meant to be listened to in peace and quiet, with concentration. Obviously not the background music type of album that one finds playing at sophisticated get-togethers, simply because it is more than music, a great maestro relating musical facts and incidents just as he might have done before a class of pupils.
FAMILY
T-Series, Rs.160
The cassette of this film had come much earlier, perhaps at the time of the release of the film itself. Now comes the CD offering. It is difficult to discern whether the offering contains original or re-mix avatars of the original. Anyway it matters little as the songs are pretty jarring on the ears, save the `Lori' by Sona Mohapatra. `Qatra Qatra' by Arnab Chakraborty and Soumya Raoh is okay kind of stuff. Curiously, even as we were talking of original and re-mix confusion, there is an official `Qatra Qatra' remix version too, and again by the same set of singers! What was the need, God only knows. Even once the song is pretty bad, why inflict the punishment twice over. The only saving grace in this CD offering is a bonus of three songs, and all of them are miles ahead of the `Family' songs. The bonus includes `Wada Raha', `Dil Dooba' by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal and `Aisa Jaadoo' by Sunidhi Chauhan. It is not worth buying this CD just for these three songs.
CHAND KE PAAR CHALO
Sa Re Ga Ma, Rs. 145 (CD)
This new film directed by Mustufa Engineer starring Preeti Jhangiani and a new boy Saahib, also introduces a music director Vishnu Narayan. Vishnu manages to give a catchy tune to the title song penned by Rishi Azad which is sung by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. While Jaspinder Narula with her "Kinna Sona Pal" also attracts, as usual. The song "Dhin Chak" repeats itself with sad and happy note as the title song does too. The song "Iss Dil Ka Kya Bharosa" sung by many singers from Shreya Ghoshal to Kuamr Sanu is forgettable though. The CD apart from eight songs, comes with bonus of two songs, "Bheed Main Tanhai Main" and "Silsilay Mulakaton Ke". Overall, an average album.
