Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I own a Hero Honda CBZ. Is it okay to use Castrol GTX or Castrol Magnatec engine oil? Till now I've been using the Hero Honda-recommended 20W 40 oil. Can I use 20W 50 instead? When should I change the engine oil?

Franklyn Henriques, via email

It is not recommended that you use synthetic oil in the CBZ because of its ill effects on the clutch. Use only the manufacturer-recommended grade of any reputed brand from a source that is genuine and change the oil every 4,000 km.

I would like to replace the existing exhaust pipe on my Suzuki Fiero with power silencer. Please advice.

Raja, via email

Replacing exhaust systems on any motorcycle is not to be taken lightly and we do not know of any system that is a good alternative to the original one — a bike manufacturer spends a lot of money on R&D and local mechanics do not have the necessary knowhow for calculating a properly tuned exhaust system. Most aftermarket systems merely add to the looks or make a louder or different sound but usually detract from power delivery in some way. Our advice would be to stick with the stock pipe.

I have a 1995 model Yamaha RX100 with 150,000 km on the odo. I had the engine overhauled and the piston and piston rings changed. Will this affect the performance of the engine and what is the normal life of the engine?

Aashish, via email

Changing the piston and the rings (provided that a satisfactory job has been done) should bring about an improvement in the performance. The normal life of any engine depends on a variety of factors and thus is difficult to predict, but having said that, consider the life of a two-stroke engine such as yours, to be between 10,000-15,000 km before it needs serious attention.
