Medical tourism
An enduring but harrowing memory from my school days pertains to a hospital visit. While playing hockey, a wrong swipe with the hockey stick by my opponent resulted in a fractured shin. Teachers and friends took me to the nearest Government Hospital. But, what proved more painful than the throbbing pain of a fractured leg was the rude behaviour of the hospital staff.
Years may have gone by, but the attitude of the staff of most hospitals towards patients remain one of stoic tolerance. But, with a growing awareness about global healthcare standards, increased spending power and an attitude that demands value for money, hospital visitors cannot be expected to take low service standards .
With medical tourism taking off, hospitals need to pay more importance to the quality of service provided to the visitor and cannot be content with the quality of medical service that they provide. The Kerala Government, CII and a host of healthcare providers are organising an international conference and Health Tourism Exhibition at Kochi from March 23 to 26, to showcase the health care standards and facilities available in Kerala
