In a string of awards showered on them, The Leela Palace recently won an award for the special outstanding ornamental garden from The Mysore Horticulture Society.
The hotel has around 4.5 acres of landscaped area in the midst of the bustling Airport Road.
The large sprawling lawns and gardens boast around 50 varieties of exotic and rare palms, around 30 varieties of trees, 150 varieties of plants, ground cover, seasonal plants and three varieties of grass. The landscaped areas also house a Japanese garden, and a lazy winding river, exotic water lilies, waterfalls, and a bridge.
The Leela spends nearly Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000 on an average per month to tend to its lawns, buying up new seasonal plants, and on herbal pesticides and nutrients, tools, maintenance.
The hotel also makes its own vermicompost and leaf mould manure for plants. Ten gardeners and two supervisors tend to the expansive gardens.
The Leela Group of Hotels only recently swept the International Five Star Diamond Awards, considered the Oscars of the hospitality industry. All its properties in India at Mumbai, Bangalore and Goa have won the awards. The Leela Group Chairman Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair also became the first ever Indian to receive the lifetime achievement award at the event. The award is given by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, New York.
