Braces boost confidence
A new survey has found that getting braces to align crooked teeth not only helps improve the stability, function, and health of an individual's teeth, but it also gives their self-esteem a boost.
The spokesperson of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), James G. Richeson, Jr., DDS, FAGD, said that orthodontics makes people feel better about themselves for they no longer have to be conscious of their teeth.
Most people , prior to orthodontics, smile with their mouth closed, as they are conscious of their teeth, but after orthodontics, they usually smile naturally, showing off their new look.
By the age of seven children start getting adult molars in place, and the position of these along with the primary teeth gives an idea to the dentist on whether or not braces will be required. The article also showed that proper alignment of teeth is also essential to combat gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss.
The article is published in the January 2006 issue of AGD Impact.
