Fun, food and fulfilment

Eat Street has the right mix of grub, entertainment and ambience

MORE ON THE MENU Eat Street has gone for a medley of interesting additions Photo: D. Gopalakrishnan

It's the same old address, but with loads of new things on offer. True to its name, Eat Street resembles an alley of all things delectable and with the inclusion of many new counters, it looks even better than before. As you step across the Snakes and Ladder game at the entrance, you realise that you are spoilt for choice. That said, choose what you want to eat and head in that direction - on the double! The counters on the right remained untouched. There's Minerva's counter with some of the best idli's, dosa and the like, followed by the chaat, Chinese and Indian food counters. It's the space on the left that has undergone a change with the counters leased out to various multinational food chains. Corn Club and Café Coffee Day still exist, but now Subway, Pizza Hut and Marry Brown also vie for the hungry clients wallet.

There are a number of little kiosks that dot the area that separate the indoor and outdoor seating. Times Chocolate Hut, a chocolate fountain, an american sweet corn kiosk and a flavoured soda kiosk are the new inclusions. The soda kiosk is something new to the city itself and for about Rs.20 for a glass you can try a rum, whiskey for fruit flavoured soda. The flavours are all pre-mixed, so you are assued of consistency in taste. The bigger enclosures that dot this part of the complex are situated at opposite ends of this strip. Yo!Gelato - the ice cream place has 21 flavours of ice-cream.

Unique sugar free icecream as well Orange-Chocolate, Scotch Whiskey and Bitter Chocolate that will appeal to the international palette feature on the menu. The juice counter has a new menu that features fruit smoothies, smoothies blended with chocolate and peanut butter and health drinks like carrot and ginger juice. Another reason why this place is popular for is its `breakfast with a view.' Breakfast begins as early as 7am and the quiet environs make for a pleasant way to begin the day. Next to the eating area lies the Kiddies Park- a park for tiny tots with many new mechanical joy rides. The tourism department has also docked two boats at the end of the mini jetty. This, of course, is only for people looking for an adrenaline rush out of a slow moving barge.

But what is truly the best feature amongst the newer ones at Eat Street is the re-opening of the terrace. This area is open only in the evenings- from 5.30 p.m. onwards, and instead of the usual self-service, table service is offered here. The other half of the terrace- the part closer to the adjoining Waterfront restaurant, has been reserved for banquets and private parties. The management will also cater to these parties. The view from here is breathtaking — a clear, uninteruppted view of the lake, the Buddha monolith, Tank Bund and more.. The only catch is that when the wind shifts direction and the unpleasant smell drifts towards you, you will have to convince yourself to ignore it and enjoy the rest on offer, or beter still, just plead with your olfactory senses to go numb for a while!
