No divorce from life

Senior citizens belonging to the Morning Club of Helpage India present a play "Divorce" this Saturday at Vasuki Auditorium

Some three years ago, the members of the Morning Club of HelpAge India performed a play based on a novel of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. That was the group's stage debut. The play not only proved cathartic for all of them, but also helped them express a creative side they weren't aware of.

This Saturday, once again they are reliving their experiences for their good. They are staging a comedy play called "Divorce", based on marital discord in life. It is about how a couple falls in love, gets married. But soon after entering into the everyday realities of life together, the two try to get out of the relationship. After meeting many other married people, they understand that it is not easy to build a relationship. How they split up and finally reconcile, divorcing themselves from the trivialities of life, is what the play highlights. They play has 11 characters.

What makes the production interesting is that the cast and crew belong to the age group between 60 and 90. Be it production, direction, script, backstage arrangements or acting, senior citizens have managed it all by themselves, without prior experience. The senior most member, R.G Majumdar, 87, is the prompter, while S.M Deb, 78, plays a lawyer. Some have even taken dual responsibilities. For instance, S. K Gupta, 84, who has produced the play, also plays one of the characters. A.K Guha, 71, the director, is also doing the role of Hakim. This one-hour, one-act play will be staged at Vasuki Auditorium Lok Kala Manch, 20, Lodi Institutional Area at 6.30 p.m.
