Out to rock the party

Bikini for brunch, track suits for cocktails! Anuj Kumar previews Malini Ramani's collection for the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week

It's my personal style that reflects in my collection

If fashion thrives on controversies, Malini Ramani personifies the statement. How much sells off her racks may be a matter of debate but over the years she has become a staple fixture on page 3 and even elsewhere. "Indeed, controversy helps but there are two kinds of controversies. One does help. The other, though, mars your image," says Malini. Putting things into perspective, Malini says the noise that emanated from different corners after she put the national flag outfit on the ramp did help. "It brought me in the news. The dress was not vulgar and I have always maintained that I didn't want to be disrespectful. Anyway, now it is allowed."

This coming India Fashion Week she is ready with what she knows best - party. "Yes, my collection is called Party. I always prefer to work on themes. Last year it was gurus and gods, this year it's party. I have divided it into three different segments. One is called Brunch. These days it has become such a big thing and people don't know what to wear for it." So, Malini suggests kaftans and mini dresses and bikinis. Bikinis? "Yes. I have always been known for resort wear. Here I am suggesting brunch at a beach in Goa."

Sharing the show with Namrata Joshipura, Malini has no hesitation in revealing that she will create drama on the ramp. "I would create a party atmosphere."

A traveller

Malini defines herself as a traveller, who just happens to be born and brought up in Delhi. It also reflects in the fabric that she uses - knits and stretches.

Then she has something for sunset cocktails - tracksuits! "I have made them more dressy by embellishing them with sequins."

The third, she says, "Is after-party wear where I have done a little experiment with my image by going for simplistic stuff like skirts with elegant paisleys, shirts with puffed sleeves and a hint of floral motifs." Or one can say a reflection of the expected trend this year.

Talking about the audacity that reflects at times from her collection, Malini holds she never designs anything that she can't wear. "It's my personal style that reflects in my collection."
