BREATHING SPACE Green Carpet is a one-stop-shop for those who fancy some greenery amidst all the concrete in the city Photo: BHAGYA PRAKASH K.
Even as Bangalore's concrete jungle grows and winds itself around the city, there's still some hope of a fresh spot of green. A patch of neat lawn here, a home-grown rose garden there provide the eye that much needed respite. But having your garden and maintaining it can be quite a task, given time and space constraints.
Green Carpet The Garden Centre steps in to offer a one-stop-shop for those who fancy some greenery amidst all the concrete in the city.
Seated in the tasteful office of the statuesque Myna Batavia, I could not help but wonder how the successful human resources consultant garnered the courage to give it all up to follow her heart. For the lady with the green thumb, Green Carpet is a labour of love. "It was a natural choice," explains Myna. "Gardening has been a passion for my family." She grew up in the lush environs of Coorg.
Green Carpet was set up in 2002 with the objective of providing a single umbrella for home gardening needs. Most people in urban metros have very little time to tend their gardens at home. There is also a burgeoning demand to spruce up their homes with real plants and miniature trees that suit the environment. Myna Batavia provides that all-important professional expertise to plan the greenery in homes and gardens and to nurture them effectively.
"Many customers just saunter in and pick up what they want," she says about her walk-in clients. The store has everything one would ever need in order to take care of a garden or perhaps a lawn, from fertilisers, pesticides, gardening tools to pretty garden furniture, garden artefacts and even gardening overalls. "I had been dabbling in gardening all this time but it was never commercial," she adds.
In fact, Green Carpet has recently launched a range of high quality and attractive plastic planters and accessories with exquisite colour finishes called Lechuza. This new range has been brought to India in association with a leading German company in garden care. The unique feature of Lechuza is its special sub-irrigation system that provides water from a built-in reservoir thereby dispensing with the need to manually water the plants for as long as ten weeks. Lechuza planters are lightweight, unbreakable, weatherproof, UV-resistant and are frost resistant as well. The new range also offers the Lechuza granulate which is suitable in places where soil cannot be used due to constrains of hygiene as in hospitals. Its non-decomposition nature ensures that the plant roots are aerated for years. In addition, it prevents failures in the fertilization process and provides a stable ph-value for better plant growth.
Backed by a team of qualified personnel including landscape architects, horticulturists and gardeners, the centre also imports items from Germany, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Taiwan and Vietnam to suit preferences of customers. Green Carpet also provides value-add services such as garden maintenance, home gardening and a horticultural clinic as well.
So, the next time you are looking for a terrarium or are hunting for that exquisite Bonsai, you know where to head. Green Carpet is at 627, 17th A Main, 6th Cross, 6th Block, Koramangala. Phone: 25504550/ 25538651
