Mixed metaphors
D. Tiroumale is holding his first solo exhibition at the Ayya Art Galaries. This alumnus of the Bharathi Kalaikkoodam, Pondicherry, has used a good combination of colours and tones to create themes that are rather surrealistic. Visually, they are mixed metaphors. There is a strong influence of Salvador Dali in his creations.
A bird's feet on human legs, which slowly becomes a huge fish and assumes feathers; `Dancing Tree' where the tree trunk twists with human muscles. Trees, flowers, birds and human forms... all merge into one to form strange apparitions.
Flowers and insects are painted realistically. Often, the figures are perched atop a globe.
`Kalam's Vision' has President Abdul Kalam's hairstyle looking like a canopy over the earth. The characteristic border of Mother Teresa's sari forms a protective hood over the globe or a flower.
Among all these confusing figurations, one suddenly finds the Tricolour.
The electronic revolution is depicted with limp mobile phones hanging from a tree and another lying on the floor. One can't help remembering Dali's treatment of clocks in exactly the same manner.
With an eye for detail and a good technique at hand, this young artist could perhaps be a little clearer in what he wants to convey, instead of trying to say too many ideas in a single visual.
The show is on till April 9, 10 a.m. 8 p.m. at 33, Woods Road, Chennai 2.
