Flair facts

Flair bartenders do two things at the same time — make cocktails and perform eye-catching acts.

They elicit attention by stylishly pouring liquor or juggling liquor bottles or setting up a pyramid of inverted glasses which flare up as spirits cascade down and flow into waiting glasses.

Behind the ease with which such tricks are performed lie numerous hours of focussed practice. As flair involves fire and glass, the bartender can't afford a slip-up while manning the counter.

Apart from causing him embarrassment, it can also result in accidents. Generally, bartenders practise with break-free and accident-free equipment specially made for such practice sessions.

Flair bartending falls into two categories — working flair and competition flair. Competition flair involves tricks that are downright risky. But, this element of risk only adds to the excitement.

In India, bar wizard competitions held in big cities allow space for such feats.

However, a performance that is filled with ` incredible flair' but does not have delicious cocktails to show will come a cropper.
