The winning equation
DuPont India announced the launch of the fifth DuPont India Challenge-2006 Science Paper Contest. The DuPont India Challenge is a nationwide science contest for Indian schools. The contest was launched in 2002 to celebrate the 200th birth anniversary of DuPont. There are two categories, one from Class 7 to 9(Junior category) and the other Class 10 to 10+2(Senior category). Students have to submit papers on relevant topics from fields of emerging sciences - Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Cloning, Genetics and Nutraceuticals.
Recently Dupont organised the award ceremony for the fourth edition. Prof. V. S. Ramamuthy, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India was the Chief Guest at the award ceremony. More than 400 schools participated in this year's DuPont India Challenge. An independent panel of experts evaluated the entries.
The winners
The top three winners receive an award of Rs.12,000, 9000, and Rs.6000 respectively, and the top 15 entries in each five subjects are awarded certificates of distinction. The science teachers of the winning school are given the special Educator Award and Certificate of Appreciation. The 2005 Special Educator Award comprises a cash award of Rs.5000.
The awardees for the fourth edition include Prateek Jain and Anubhav Gupta of class 12, Modern School, Barakhamba Road, New Delhi, Mehak Jindal and Misha Chittoda of class 12, Amity International School, Noida and Prasant Raina of class 10, Champion School, Mumbai. Junior category prizes were bagged by Sahir Maitreya Doshi of Class 7, The Cathedral and John Cannon Middle School, Suraj Shankar of Class 8, St. Gregorios High School, Mumbai and Harshavardhini B.S. of Class 9, Janodaya School, Bangalore. Mansha Seth Pasricha of Modern School and Piu Guha of Cathedral and John Cannon Middle School were awarded the Special Educator Awards for Science Teachers in senior and junior categories respectively.
Anubhav and Prateek, the first prize winners, when asked about their preparation for the exam and essay writing, said they were comfortable and enjoyed it as it was part of their study and took just fifteen days to complete.
The second prize winners explained that the Internet and books helped them a lot. And they usually completed their essay in the school itself.
All four, when asked about their spending of the prize money said they would give it to the parents.
