Angels take to the kitchen

RAHUL VERMA stops by at Angels in My Kitchen to pamper his soft sweet tooth
|
I have such a soft spot for sweets that my sweet tooth is fast turning into a soft tooth. But that hasn't stopped me from gorging on sweets. And though I am one of those odd people who prefer Indian sweets to anything else, I was still mildly excited when a photographer colleague started raving about a new pastry place that he had been to.
The place he was going gaga about was interestingly called Angels in My Kitchen. I knew there was a place answering to this name in Friends' Colony. But this, I later learnt, was a new branch that had just opened in Defence Colony.
The good thing about Defence Colony is that it's centrally located. The bad thing about it, of course, is that it's a parking nightmare.
I turned into a contortionist, and somehow squeezed my car into a slot that could barely be seen. Angels in My Kitchen was on the same row as Swagat, the famed cousin of Sagar, where the crabs are delicious.
It was a nice-looking place, sparse, but pleasant to the eye. There were a few tables and chairs strewn around. One could sit there and contemplate life over a piece of banana walnut cake. I decided that I'd pack some stuff and see what the sweet-loving friends at home thought about it.
Aromas all around
So I ordered a teacake, a strawberry pastry, a chilled pie and some bread stuffed with pieces of mutton. And I waited, while the food flavours and aromas all around made my stomach do cartwheels.
I have to tell you that the stuff I later had was good, but nothing to write home about. I am a die-hard fan of Wenger's, and I find that nothing really compares with its pastries and patties.
But Angels is a runner-up even when compared with the stuff that you get in the various Nirula's outlets.
The good thing about this place, though, is the wide variety of items they have.
Even the pricing is fair. The different kinds of breads - wheat bran, wheat oat, brown, milk, garlic and so on - cost between Rs.16 and 25. The expensive ones are the multigrain and milk muesli breads, which cost Rs.35. It has all kinds of puffs - vegetarian, corn, mushroom, spinach and so on. The prices range from Rs.18 to 28.
Vegetarian sausage
They have something called a vegetarian sausage roll (Rs.20) that shook me a bit. Would that be sausages made out of nutri nuggets? The pastries that I had were light and creamy - but not very different from what you get in local bakeries.
The mutton-stuffed bread was soft and tasty, but it wasn't quite spilling over with mutton. I wasn't unhappy with what I ate, but it didn't make me burst into a song either. But then, in some quarters, that would be seen as good news!
