Just a hobby
Philately is just a hobby that gives pleasure and spreads knowledge and friendship. It should be left at that and not turned into a serious investment option (`The stamp collectors', March 13).
The collector who sold a sheet of 42 stamps with a face value of Rs.120 for a whopping sum of Rs.27, 500 managed to do so not because of his investment but because of certain technical snags in printing. The Philatelists know that there are stamp catalogues available and the price quoted therein are mere values for exchanging purpose and not the true value of the stamps in the market.
If I want to exchange stamps of India with a Philatelist from UK, I will go as per the catalogue value. Some genuine stamp collectors do not even refer to catalogues; they just exchange stamps on a one to one basis.
The reason for the sky-high prices for some stamps is that the Department of Post is not releasing enough of those stamps for all the stamp collectors in India and abroad. However like Roland Nelson and Krishnan say, stamps will never lose their intrinsic value.
Philately should be treated as a hobby. I tell young stamp collectors that this is a hobby and nothing more.
