FLOATING FORMS One of K. Srinivasan's works
"Art is not meant to be understood and one should not expect to find meaning in aesthetics," says artist K. Srinivasan. An alumnus of the Government School of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, Srinivasan began his foray into art with modernist styles such as colour field painting and moved on to geometric compositions. Abstraction has remained a constant in his painting, clearly reiterating his belief that aesthetics need not be explained, it needs only to be appreciated.
Having drawn inspiration from the traditional `kolam' from a young age, he has moved away from the carefully positioned dots and the calculated line of his muse to create free-flowing areas. The formulaic kolams have been translated in the artist's mind and have metamorphosed into spots that fill the picture plane.
In varied tonalities of beige and brown, purple and pink, blue and violet, viridian and olive, small triangular sections of colour are layered and over this are superimposed dots that create a shifting rhythm of floating forms. These forms are ever changing, allowing for free interpretation such as when seen through a child's eyes.
Mesmerising in an imagined flashing movement the dots are all pervasive, seemingly divided only by the varied tones beneath them. In some paintings, Srinivasan has tried to introduce imagery such as landscapes but claims to feel uncomfortable with these, and yet, it is just these hints at recognisable entities that sometimes provide relief to the monotony of the speckled plane. The artist prefers pure abstraction to figuration, asserting that this is conducive to his creation of art, but how long will the dot endure? The repetitive refrain begs one to wonder where these dots will lead and when, if ever, they will move on.
Srinivasan's paintings are on display until April 5 at Sri Parvathi Art Gallery, 28/160 Eldams Road.
