Ashmit gets serious

Ashmit Patel plays the part of a mystique singer in his new film

ON A SONG Most of Ashmit Patel's forthcoming films are solo hero projects

If you find Ashmit Patel talking about how important it is to get in touch with your spiritual side, don't be caught unawares. His latest film seems to have left a lasting impression on him. After packing a punch in the action flick Fight Club, Ashmit will be seen in a diametrically opposite role in Banaras. The film also stars Urmila Matondkar and Dimple Kapadia.

Ashmit describes Banaras as a commercial film with an `arty' feel. "The film was shot in Banaras and has elements of mysticism. I play a mystic singer who teaches at the Benaras Hindu University. Abandoned at birth, I'm brought up by a sweeper. I fall in love with Urmila Matondkar, who belongs to the elite set of the society," says the actor, who is in town to shoot for Tum Mere Ho, directed by Umer Sharif.

The shooting is about to resume after a break. Ashmit rues, "The last I visited Hyderabad was before the release of Murder. But this time, we've been shooting for the last few days and I haven't been able to look around the city."

Over the last one year, he has been in the headlines for reasons other than films. First came the spat between Amisha and her family members and then the infamous MMS clip. "I'd rather not talk about those issues. Too much has been said and it's better for me to steer clear of those topics," he clams up. On a professional note, he's open to acting with Amisha. "If an interesting project comes up and the director wants the two of us to feature in it, why not?"

His line up of projects includes the romantic comedy Kudiyon Ka Zamaana with Mahima and Rekha, Dil Diya Hai with Emraan Hashmi, where Ashmit is the owner of a nightclub in Amersterdam, and Friends Forever, which has a 3D animation character called Zampano.

Bollywood has recognised that there's more to Ashmit than merely being Amisha Patel's younger brother. But while Ashmit is a part of many a multi-star cast project, he's yet to call the shots at the box office on his own. "It's tougher to leave an impression in a film that has a number of actors. I've enjoyed doing multi star cast films. At the same time, most of my forthcoming films are solo hero projects. Looking back since the time of Murder, I'm happy with my work. Of course, a few more hits would have been wonderful," he concludes.
