Beckett's 100

The centenary celebrations of playwright, poet and novelist Samuel Beckett kick off on April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Alliance Francaise. April 13 is the date of Beckett's birth, the day on which Beckett centenary celebrations started in cities and towns across the world.

Beckett brought to literature and theatre an acute awareness of the absurdity of human existence — our desperate search for meaning and our individual isolation. Waiting for Godot, written in 1950, remains his best-remembered and iconic play.

The inauguration event at Alliance will include a talk on Absurd Theatre and Samuel Beckett by S. Ramasamy, followed by a panel discussion.

The celebrations will be spread over four months between mid April and the end of August and will include plays, film shows, workshops and an exhibition. For details, call 51231340.
