Hair styling adds flair to personality

Today one cannot be done by wearing fashionable clothes, fashion is complete only with a good hairstyle, writes SUMIT BHATTACHARJEE

STYLE GURU Jawed Habib working on a model

"What do you do when you get up early in the morning? Walk up to the mirror and check your shape and unmindfully you would set your hair with the fingers. Hair styling plays a vital role in grooming your personality." This was the opinion of ace hair stylist Jawed Habib on hair styling.

Jawed was in this port-cum-steel city on Thursday to inaugurate his franchisee Hair and Beauty Studio at Praveena Plaza on the VIP Road.

The world record holder who recorded 410 haircuts in 24 hours feels that "Look good and feel good" should be the catch phrase in today's fashionable world. "When you look good, you feel good and that triggers off a chain reaction. Today one cannot be simply done by wearing fashionable clothes. The fashion is complete only with a good hairstyle. Nothing can change your personality better than your hair," he opines.

He is the third generation hair stylist. The legacy left behind by his grandfather Nazir Ahmed was further taken forward by his father Habib Ahmed. His grandfather was known for grooming the hair of Jawaharlal Nehru and Lord Mountbatten. "In those days it was only haircut, today it is hair styling," adds he.

A post-graduate in French from Jawaharlal Nehru University Jawed wanted to become a hotel management professional but somewhere down the line he changed his mind and joined his father's business. And he has no regrets for having done so. He underwent a two-year hair styling and grooming course at London's Morris School of Hair Dressing and London School of Fashion.

In little over two decades Habib's Hair and Beauty Studios has become an international brand with over 55 salons in 20 cities in India apart from in London, New York, Dhaka and Nepal.

The hair style-guru is well-known for his pioneering work in hair colouring. Basing on his achievements, personal hair care giant Hindustan Lever picked him as its brand ambassador for its Sun Silk pro-colour brand.

On the trend of hair colouring he says, "There is nothing called trend in my dictionary. A trend is basically the need of the client and since each client has his or her own needs, there is no one particular trend. But the hair colouring factor is going to stay. Colour to the hair adds colour to the personality."

In 1985 along with his father he started a hairdressing Academy to teach the art. The best students from the academy are absorbed into any one of the salons in India or abroad. "My father also opened a special school to train differently-abled persons in order to help them earn a living," says Jawed.

Complete hair solution

The complete hair solution concept is something that makes him stand apart from the rest. "Over here a simple hairstyle would comprise shampooing of the hair, conditioning, drying, setting and applying of serum apart from the haircut. It is a complete package and not just a haircut," says K. Bharati owner of the franchisee set up.

The studio apart from hair styling and hair care will also provide beauty services like facials, manicure, pedicure and waxing. "We also undertake party and bridal make-ups," she adds.
