Friends forever

"Krishna Cottage", a Tamil sitcom on Jaya TV (Monday-Friday, 9.30 p.m.-10 p.m.), is successfully completing its 400th episode on Wednesday (April 19). This mega serial, produced and directed by Prabhu Nepal, is inspired by "Friends", one of the most popular sitcoms among the youth in the U.S., which ran for nearly 10 years. "Krishna Cottage" has been able to attract the youth as it is a fun serial with plenty of light moments. The sitcom is about a bunch of youngsters and elders from different backgrounds who meet in Chennai but become friends though most of the time they are at each other's throats. To add more local flavour, Prabhu Nepal is now introducing two new characters, that of a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, who are always fighting and creating more hilarious situations. It looks like "Krishna Cottage" will easily complete another 400 episodes.

Finally, a settlement

The deadlock between the TFPC and the satellite channels seems to have been resolved with Jaya TV getting the rights to air clips and songs from new films. As per the agreement between the TFPC and Jaya TV, it will be a revenue sharing deal with some conditions such as no ratings or countdown programmes and no interviews with stars and technicians. The TFPC is also negotiating with Sun TV network, which has been offered the same terms. Meanwhile, on Tamil New Year Day, none of the channels had any exclusives with stars other than repeats of earlier programmes and some interviews with Telugu and Malayalam actors. However, there was stiff competition among the channels to show the latest movies such as "Kathal" (Sun TV), "Kanda Naal Muthal" (Jaya TV) and "ABCD" (Raj TV), which kept the viewers glued to their sets.

Celebrity parties

MTV's international channel VH1, which airs international pop albums and entertainment related stories, is making inroads into India, especially in the metros. Recently, it ran a series on the most powerful men and women in the world. One of the best of the lot was on Oprah Winfrey, television hostess, legend among superstars and the first black woman billionaire. Now, VH1's latest "All access celebrity parties", being telecast today at 10.30 p.m. (April 17), takes you behind the scenes to the mostoutrageous Hollywood parties. Remember, Page 3 types in exotic locations make for the hottest new programmes on local Indian channels, especially on the news channels. And with fashion shows dime a dozen, the channels are lapping it up, as there is also an avalanche of surrogate ads for such party shows.
