High on golf
Freezing temperature, at 1800 metre above sea level, the surroundings of breathtaking Swiss mountain Engadin, St. Mortiz and golf! Ever heard of such a combination? You may not have if you are not a golf follower. Also because India didn't have a history of playing golf there.
But now, this combination became a part of the experiences of a golfer by passion and a travel and tourism agency managing director by profession. It was when Chivas Golf Snow Championship at St. Moritz, Switzerland, invited two avid golfers - Vikram Madhok, the MD of Abercrombie and Kent India Limited along and Pratap Singh Gaikwad to take part in the contest some time ago. It was for the first time in the history of the 27-year-old tournament that two Indians were invited to play golf there.
Over 80 people from 11 countries including France, Austria, Hungary and Poland participated in the event organised at the foot of Piz Bernina.
Calling it an "unforgettable experience", Madhok shares that throughout the course, the snow was heavily compacted a day before the tournament to define the fairways. The balls were fluorescent amber in colour and only golf clubs with a steel shaft were used.
"Building a snow golf course is an expensive venture and thus may not develop in regions of Northern India," he bemoans.
