Passion for fashion

The pick of collections showcased at the two fashion weeks will make their way to Hyderabad. SANGEETHA DEVI.K checks out what's in store...

HAUTE STUFF Hyderabadis are ready to snap up products of the fashion weeks

The two fashion weeks - the Lakme Fashion Week in Mumbai and the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in Delhi - have drawn to a close. The verdict, as expected, is in favour of Delhi.

If you disagree, well, the debate and the post mortem can go on. For now, let's forget the mayhem that surrounded the glitzy events and talk about what our city will get out of all that `ramp'age.

Buyers from the city who've attended the fashion weeks are back after having placed orders with the cream of national designers. From what we hear, Hyderabad will get to stock up more A-list designer wear than ever before. And in the recent years, the spending power has gone only in one direction - upwards. The well heeled and the upwardly mobile sections are willing to splurge on designer wear. The fact that women here are willing to experiment on new trends doesn't hurt either.

The big names

Smita Shroff of Elahe observes, "Earlier we'd hesitate to bring a lot of, say, halter tops to the city. There were very few takers and the limited clientele too wouldn't spend much on outfits that were not commonly worn in Hyderabad. But now there's a change in buying patterns. Women follow fashion trends and want designs that are up-to-the-minute."

Smita will be getting collections of "Anamika Khanna, Sabyasachi Mukherji, Tarun Tahiliani, Krishna Mehta, Kavita Bhartia, Shantanu and Nikhil, Puja Arya, Nikki Mahajan, Surily Goel, Wendell Rodericks, Nandita Mehtani, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna and Rajesh Pratap Singh. The collections will arrive from July-August onwards."

The fashion weeks showcased Fall-Winter 2006 collections and hence, some buyers will bring down the new lines in the latter half of 2006.

But others have asked for variations in winter wear so that the clothes can be worn for major part of the year. Vivek Khurana of Origins belongs to the second category. "Hyderabad has a relatively short winter. So I've placed orders for clothes that can be worn round the year. We are getting the works of Shantanu and Nikhil, Neeru Kumar, Gunjan and Rahul, and Priya Awasti amongst others. Some of the clothes should be available within the next 15-20 days," he says.

Sudha Jalan of Also too has carefully excluded the woollen wear. "We are avoiding clothes that are meant for harsh winters. We'll stock up on fashion collections from designers like Raghavendra Rathore, Rohit Bal, Rina Dhaka, Suneet Verma and Ashish Pandey from June onwards. You can expect some smart casuals and wedding wear," she says.

Splurge for a reason

If you're looking at what's in vogue, then all things feminine are in. So, skirts and dresses will rule at least for a year.

Hyderabadis, according to the fashion fraternity, don't merely go by labels. It's about wearing a stunning outfit that makes you feel comfortable than merely sporting an A-list designer label.

"The awareness, I think, is due to television. There's also a change in attitude. Women are a lot more accepting of new trends. The peer group is more tolerant and allows them to make their own individual style statement. And price is not a dictating factor," sums up Vivek Khurana.
