Magic in black and white

Designer Chaitanya Rao conjures up a black and white collection for summer

DRAMATIC STATEMENT Actor Asin in a Chaitanya Rao creation

Imagine doing a collection in just black and white. Limiting? Not really, at least for designer Chaitanya Rao.

It's the designer's first look at summer. And he wishes to stand out with an exclusive black and white theme in a market cluttered with pastels and fruity hues. "At the outset, I thought black and white would help me stay focussed. But as I went about exploring them, I realised there was more to black and white than just the basic look. It's very urban, dramatic and versatile," says the designer, at his store in Shyam's Garden, Khader Nawaz Khan Road.

"White has always been the colour for sweltering summer. But what I've done is use white as white — plain with no other colour accent. Then, of course, there is plain black for nocturnal outings and parties. The third is a playful line in black-and-white," adds the designer, displaying his line of strapless dresses, spaghetti tops, halter dresses, trousers, shrugs, jackets with belts, shirts and skirts.

The line of Western separates is chic and understated with clean lines and subtle embellishments. "Yes, it's deliberate. Summer is more about comfort. So I've focussed on cuts and styles rather than on embellishments. But for the touches of ribbon embroidery, I haven't done much. The thing with black and white is that even self-designs, digital and graphic prints make a dramatic statement."

Talking about the newly introduced line for men, the designer says, "I've just added a few shirts and jackets to test the water. It's an all-white line in linen. The accents come in the form of well-thought-out pockets and piping."

About the Asin promo for his summer line, the designer gushes, "I've been fortunate to have done the wardrobe for the actor in `Gajini'. I've also worked with her for a couple of commercials. Asin is one of the Kollywood stars with a fine design sensibility. She is clear about what she wants to wear."

Chaitanya, who is currently working on the wardrobe for Mahesh Babu's forthcoming film, will also handle actor Vikram's costumes for "Bhima."
