FOUR FRAMES
Impact of polls
The audience response to the Tamil New Year releases has been lukewarm. Ajit's "Tirupati" had an average opening compared to the record opening his films normally take. Though "Tiruttu Payale" is receiving appreciation, collections are yet to pick up. It is obvious that the timing of the releases coinciding with the Assembly elections has affected the box-office. The Hindu-CNN-IBN poll published on Tamil New Year Day (April 14) says the Tamil Nadu elections are "too close to call" and that has completely shifted the focus of the public, mainly the youth, to the election scenario in the State. And with hardly any publicity on television, all new releases are floundering at the box-office. In the cities, some of the releases had a decent opening, but in the B and C stations, collections are pathetic as the youth are busy with election work. Now it looks like the new summer releases will hit the screen only after May 11, when the election results are out.
