Now playing, `Rang De Basanti', at Gaylord

KHAANE KI PATHSHALA Some of the fare on offer at the Gaylord restaurant

`Rang De Basanti' is back in Connaught Place. No, not in Plaza or Rivoli but in Gaylord. And Gaylordis not a cinema hall but one of the oldest restaurants of Delhi. It is moving on with its calendar of food festivals and the latest offering is the `Rang De Basanti' food festival with which Gaylord is celebrating the spirit of Baisakhi.

Sachin Sehgal, the head chef, says that this two-week-long festival is "a gift to the all the foodies of Delhi on the occasion of Baisakhi." The motive behind this particular food festival is to bring the Punjabi spirit into the heart of Delhi, he adds. This `khaane ki pathshala' is offering Delhi's favourite Punjabi food, which is expected to make you `lose control'.

Folk music

The restaurant, decorated with kites and ethnic lamps, attempts to take you on a trip through the streets of Punjab. Punjabi folk music playing here complements the waiters dressed in satin `lungi kurtas'.

Talking of the food, the chef has done a fair job, both with the names and the taste of the items in the special menu. The achari paneer tikka, the Amritsari machhi, the chaamp Chandigarh are pretty good, as is the dhaba murg and the good old sarson ka saag with makki ki roti. The Jalandhri meat biryani is a nice option for those who prefer rice over rotis. However, try to avoid rehri wala gosht. It is not very tasty.

Natural beverages like ganne ka ras and lassi go well with the food.

As they say, `the best is saved for the last', so don't forget to try the thandi kheer or the matka kulfi.
