CHORDS AND NOTES

EIGHT STAGES OF LOVE

Sa Re Ga Ma, Rs.175

`The moon, flowers, stars, winds, streams, butterflies and clouds ... seem to have been created only for lovers. Were it not for lovers, the beauty of the earth and the skies would be meaningless.' This is Naseeruddin Shah's introduction to the very first song in this CD, `Jaane Kitni Sadiyon Se'. Aptly titled "Eight Stages of Love", this album comprises eight songs, each touching upon a different mood of love.

Bringing out the simplicity and the complexity of love at once, Javed Akhtar is at his romantic best. Metaphorical in the first song, the lyrics get more and more flowery, always in sync with Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma's music.

In `Tumse Hui Dooriyan', both the lyricist and the composer pause to regard the hardships of the journey, and Kavita Krishnamurthy's voice, bubbly and joyous in the duets, suddenly acquires an element of pain.

The twin solo renderings by M.G. Srinivas are impressive, and one can understand why the CD begins with one of them and ends with the other. Babul Supriyo infuses subtle feelings in his songs, and his understated style gels well with the overall experience the album tries to achieve.

The narratives by Shah are as well written as they are well rendered.
