Fabrica, Benetton Group's communication research centre, and Forma, Centro Internazionale di Fotografia (international photography centre) are holding their prestigious international F awards at Forma in Italy, this year.

The awards, dedicated to promoting social documentary photography, aim to involve photographers from all over the world.

For the very first time, eminent Indian photographer Raghu Rai will be part of the jury, which will be headed by renowned British photographer Tom Stoddart.

The awards aim to recognise photography that documents and criticises, that tells a story: drama, struggles, rights abuses, but also dignity; pain and consolation, desperation and hope; the loss of everything and the triumph of life's new possibilities and lastly the things people do to face all of this.

In a word, life.

To qualify, each entry must comprise of a series of photographs (10-30 images) with a unifying theme. Photographers wishing to participate should send in a series of photographs with a social theme by May 31, 2006.

The international competition will select a winner in two categories — the F award category — open to all age groups, and the F25 award category — open to participants under 25 years of age.

The jury will reward the most interesting project with 20,000 Euros and the possibility of publishing a book, while the section for photographers under 25 years of age will see the winner awarded with a one-year scholarship at Fabrica's Photography Department.
