Living history
Vasant Sathe
History seems to be quite a dull subject when read in heavy books with tedious vocabulary. But it generates keen interest when somebody who has witnessed history narrates it. One who has been a part of the happenings of the past can give an exciting account of it.
One such man is Vasant Sathe. A lawyer by training, a parliamentarian by conviction, a patriot at heart and a socialist in spirit he has come up with the paperback edition of his book "Memoirs of a Rationalist". The book was released formally the other day at the Oxford Bookstore in the Capital. The book traces his life right from his college days when the Indian freedom struggle was at its peak to his illustrious career as a politician. It even succeeds in covering the most intimate times of his life where he talks at length about his relationship with his wife Jaishree.
Sathe, a boxing champion in his college days, is believed to have been a close associate of Indira Gandhi. In his book he discusses at length the various policies adopted by the Congress. In the chapter "Kaalchakra A roller-coaster ride", he gives his own account on issues such as the imposition of the Emergency in 1975.
Creation of the mind
Sathe, a firm believer in the non-existence of a supreme power that controls the universe, argues that the whole concept of `God' is a creation of the human mind and it is the reason behind problems like blind faith and communalism.
Speaking on the occasion, Jyoti Sabharwal, the editor of the book, said that Sathe is one of the most amenable and uncomplicated authors she has ever worked with. This book is a candid, delectable political memoir of a rationalist, which though packed with action, motion and emotion, never loses sight of a rationale.
