East meets West at a concert in the city
|
A confluence of the Indian sounds and jazz rhythms. That's what one can expect at a musical evening, where tabla player-composer Bikram Ghosh, vocalist Parthasarathy Desikan and sarod player Sunando Mukherjee will perform with French band, Mezcal Jazz Unit, on April 29, 7 p.m. at Taj Fisherman's Cove.
The concert is organised by The Alliance Francaise, Prakriti Foundation and Fisherman's Cove, with the support of the Embassy of France in India.
Ghosh, who leads Rhythmscape, a fusion band, performs regularly with Pandit Ravi Shankar and has also shared the stage with the likes of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Balamuralikrishna.
Mezcal, founded by bassist-composer Emmanuel de Gouvello in 1986, is committed to playing vibrant original music. The band members include Vivian Peres, Chirstophe Azema and Jean-Marie Frederic.
Playing as a quartet, Mezcal's compositions are marked by a certain sophistication and rhythm that's its own, though there are traditional influences. The band has toured the world extensively and has several albums to its credit.
